Club Philosophy

Emerald Velo Bicycle Club is a bicycle racing club, members are encouraged to, but are not required to race. We sponsor the OBRA Time Trial Championship as the primary revenue-generating event for the club. We also provide volunteer support to one of our sponsors (River City Bicycles), as necessary. We (members of the team) lead training rides (with the emphasis on race preparation & conditioning) on days in which there are no conflicting races.

Currently, there are organized "training for racing" Saturday team rides and sometimes a Sunday team ride. On occasion, we have mid-week rides (when daylight allows). Attending some of these rides will enable you to get to know the individual members who are in your category, which in turn may provide opportunities to arrange for training-rides at times other than the weekends. If the team philosophies correspond with your goals, then you might wish to consider joining the team. Note: any team member is encouraged to lead a ride, so as a member, you could set-up times for other than weekends, if that better fits into your riding & training schedule.

As a team, we support each other in training and racing. Often team racing tactics can determine the outcome of a race and thus it is not necessarily the strongest rider who would win, making it easier to be competitive when racing as part of a team, as opposed to competitors who are riding unattached. When possible, competitors also communicate in advance of events to organize ride-sharing to out-of-town races. This provides a two-fold benefit: cost savings plus emergency support in the instance of an accident.

There is also a "training camp" available in early season for a greater degree of race season preparation.

Potential members are encouraged to come out to one of the team rides, as posted on the Emerald Velo web-site, to see if they are a good "fit" (i.e., goals, attitude, etc.) for the team.

The race re-imbursement program allows for 50% of the entry fee to be returned (this goes into effect after new members have been on the team for one year). The pre-requisite for re-imbursement is that the team member be available for support at the OBRA Time Trial Championship event (noted below).

In regards to the OBRA Time Trial Championship event: Emerald Velo promotes this revenue-generating event and all of the team members are all called-upon as volunteers for this. Team members provide support as corner marshals, course set-up, start-line holders, etc.

FAQs

What is the make-up of the team membership?

The team membership is dynamic, but over the past couple of years we have had an average membership of about 38 team-mates. We had ±40 members during the year of 2007:
Cat 5: 2
Cat 4: 21
Cat 3: 16
Cat 2: 3
Cat 1: 1

What kind of group rides are available?

We have team rides usually every Saturday and sometimes on Sunday. Check out the website (http://www.emeraldvelo.org) and join the group for a ride to see if the team is a good fit for you.

Is EVC (EVBC: Emerald Velo Bicycle Club) separate from Finnegans etc., or is it all one team?

EVC or EVBC is the team name; "FinnegansToys/DiscoverChiropractic" are the current sponsor's names under which we sign-in at races. The team has its primary sponsors of Finnegans Toys/Discover Chiropractic, although there are (4~5) second level sponsors.

Are there any requirements for membership (number of races entered, etc.)?

The primary requirement is support (this means providing course monitoring, traffic control, etc.) for the event EVC promotes: the one-day OBRA Time Trial Championship event in August.

Team members also agree to provide volunteers to support River City's summer ride (Barlow Trail Century) as well. River City is our sponsor, and it is one of the few requirements that River City asks of us. It is not mandatory that you support the River City ride, but if you do, it can count toward your "team volunteer requirement commitment" instead of for the State TT; but only if there are enough other volunteers for the TT and with Board Of Director approval.

A Brief History of Emerald Velo

Emerald Velo Cycling Team, Inc. (EVC) was founded in Eugene, Oregon by Paul Schwyhart, Larry Smith and Peter Kukula in the mid 1980's. Our three founding members wanted a club that focused on team riding and tactics, and that would concentrate on developing Junior riders. Over the last 10 years, most of the membership has moved to the Portland area.

The club incorporated in 1998 and is now called Emerald Velo Cycling Team, Inc. Club decisions are made by our Board of Directors who are elected by the club membership.

Our club also promotes races throughout the year. From 1998 through 2000, we promoted or sponsored:

The Tour of Willamette, a stage race in the Willamette Valley around Eugene.

Columbia Plateau, a stage race.

Oregon Time Trial Championships

Jersey 98.jpg (193779 bytes) Safeway Food & Drug became our Title Sponsor in 1998. With the World Master's Games here in Portland, Safeway saw the benefit of affiliating with a healthy sport. It helps that cyclists also eat lots of food. Our other sponsors are Saturn of Beaverton, Cannondale Bicycles and River City Bicycles of Portland.

1998 was a banner year for Emerald Velo. Team riders worked hard in their races and for each other and the results show it:

  • 1 National Bronze
  • 4 National top 10 finishes
  • 4 World Masters Games Gold medals
  • 13 World Masters Games medals overall
  • 32 World Masters Games top 10 finishes
  • 21 state Gold medals
  • 14 state Bronze medals
  • Oregon BAR Tandem and Master Champions
  • 1996 - 1997

Jersey 96-97.jpg (51052 bytes) The new season saw two new sponsors, QualMed Health Insurance Company and Safeway stores (now Safeway Food & Drug). Saturn of Beaverton continued their support. With the help of these sponsors, in 1997 the team formed an elite Women's racing team.

Building on 1995, EVC posted these results in 1996:

  • 53 Victories
  • 1 US Jr. World Team Member
  • 1 Jr. National Team Member
  • 1 Gold Medal - National Championships
  • 29 Gold Medals - Oregon State Championships
  • 33 Silver Medals - Oregon State Championships
  • 1 Bronze Medal - National Championships
  • 13 Bronze Medals - Oregon State Championships
  • 1994 - 1995

Jersey 94-95.jpg (148329 bytes) 1994 saw the emergence of EVC as a regional power. We added BridgePort Ales as Title Sponsor and Co-Motion Bicycles of Eugene, Oregon as our frame supplier. Co-Motion is known as one of the premier tandem manufacturers in the world. They also make a great single bike (called a 1/2 bike by the tandem riders).

In 1995, EVC was voted the Division II USCF Club of the year. This honor was based on the contributions the club made to the sport and to the community in general. Our riders helped with QualMed Bike Rodeos, teaching children bicycle and traffic safety. Also, several riders were speakers for Think First (R), a national program designed to prevent brain and spinal cord injuries. For more information, visit their web site: http://www.thinkfirst.org

Emerald Velo has maintained a high profile and abiding dedication to its sponsors. Painting Specialties of Eugene was our first sponsor. Painting Specialties was owned by Paul Schwyhart and painted bicycle frames for several national manufacturers. The company remained a sponsor until Paul's retirement at the end of 1997.

In 1992, in addition to Painting Specialties, the club added The Bike Gallery from Portland, and Cyclops frames from Canada. The club introduced many outstanding riders to the sport, and began to develop several riders who would later join the US National Team. Aaron Olson, Jason Hall and Cory Domingues all went on to greater glory. In 1999, Nutrafig announced that Aaron has joined their national level squad.
